Prologue

The episode starts out with the shows first opening, an extended version compared to future episodes. It sets the scene. It's raining and there is a party. We see an old gentlemen in a wheelchair. He is presumably the host of this gathering. The lyrics to the opening start as someone exits the party and goes to the third floor. He enters an empty room and locks the door with a deadbolt. The rain stops and it pans to outside the room. There is an adjacent open window with a mysterious figure tying a rope to the post of a bed. He steps out the window and slowly inches along the ledge. A full moon is shown through the clouds as this mysterious figure jumps to the balcony of the room the lone guest is in. The figure pulls open the balcony doors and the guest stands up as a gun is pulled on him. He cowers and backs himself towards the door and the gun fires. Straight through the guest's heart. All the other guests downstairs hear the shot and rush upstairs to find out what has happened. They have to end up busting the door down due to the deadbolt the deceased used earlier. They discover the dead body as the crescendo of the opening song comes to a close.

Switch to the living room after the police arrive. Inspector Megure is the lead and investigating the murder. The man in the wheelchair demands to know how long this foolish investigation will last. Megure recaps the crime and gives a name to the deceased. He was Mr. Yamazaki, President of Yatsubishi Bank. A voice of a young man is heard off screen. A teenager in a blue suit and red bowtie comes through the open door and starts to breakdown and detail the individual elements that were found regarding the death of Mr. Yamazaki. He states that the door was locked from the inside and that the killer entered from the next window over and left the same way. During his deduction, everyone looks at him stunned and amazed at his prowess for uncovering the truth. He continues that there were no footprints below the window and that it points to an inside job. The host of the party doesn't believe a word that this kid is saying and that it's almost a ten meter jump between the two windows, stating it's impossible. The teen responds by stating that the killer could have gotten across using the edge of the roof and that the gap would instead only be two meters to land on the veranda. The host calls his reasoning childish and inquires to have the killer could have gotten back across safely to the roof's edge which is only ten centimeters deep. Rope is the answer! The killer fixed it to the veranda and used it to return. Inspector Megure can't seem to figure out how the killer removed the rope after getting out of the room. The boy claims it is a simple trick and that a stick was tied to one end of the rope and stuck between two posts on the veranda. After the killer crossed back, the stick easily dropped when slacked and pulled on. There is also marks on the veranda where the rope was that will help in proving the killer's guilt. There is then speculation on why Mr. Yamazaki was in the room by himself with the door locked. It's theorized that the killer knew Mr. Yamazaki and had told him to meet him on the third floor because he had something important to discuss. The host is outraged and demands an answer as to who broke in and killed his best friend.

There is only one person who knew enough about the home and could explore it without raising any suspicious. And that culprit is...THE HOST HIMSELF! The host laughs it off replying that his leg hasn't even healed yet. The boy says what will become his future catch phrase "One Truth Prevails" and throws a nearby globe at the host in his wheelchair. He leaps out of the chair and stands firm on both legs. His maid is shocked as it turns out that his leg had healed more than 3 months ago. This was confirmed by his doctor. He and Mr. Yamazaki had under the table dealings that may have turned south. As hee tries to run away, the boy kicks the nearby globe and it hits the host knocking him down. The scene switches to outside with the host now in handcuffs and a lump on his head from being hit. Inspector Megure pats the boy on the back thanking him once again for his help. The boy works for the police on difficult cases and says that if they ever need to rely on him again, the police can feel free to contact him, Detective Shinichi Kudo!

Plot

And so it begins! We see the title card displaying the name of the case for the episode. Shinichi's house is shown and he is seen sleeping in his room. He is awoke by a sudden explosion. He looks out the window and sees smoke coming from next door. The explosion was from his neighbor's latest invention. Dr. Hiroshi Agasa has known Shinichi since childhood and is good friends with his parents Yukido and Yukiko. He jokingly says that his mishap was just a way to wake Shinichi up. Works better than an alarm clock, wouldn't you agree? Shinichi takes Agasa into his house to tend to his scrapes and bruises. Dr. Agasa is amazed at the number of books inside the house and states that those books were the reason that Shinichi's father was able to become an international mystery writer. Shinichi inquires as to what this mystery invention Agasa is creating. It turns out he was making what he calls a Personal Mobility Rocket. It is rocket pack strapped onto the user's back with controls in front of the waist. He accidently flips it on and is sent spiralling into a nearby bookcase.

The scene switches to the Mouri Detective Agency where Kogoro is punching a picture of Kudo appearing in the newspaper. He is angry at Kudo because he is unable to find work since Kudo is so good at it. His daughter, Ran comes into the office and tells him to call down and that it can't be helped. Kogoro rips the paper into shreds as Ran heads off to school.

On the side of a street, Shinichi's face appears on television sets and there is a news report detailing him as a famous detective. We see 3 young kids watching who later turn out to be Ayumi, Mitsuhiko, and Genta. Shinichi passes by them on the way to school with his head cocked high and his ego gets even larger as he passes some fellow schoolmates talking about how cool he is. He continues to walk along his path when he is suddenly hit in the head with a napsack. It is Ran Mouri, 2nd year student of Teitan High School and childhood friends of Kudos. She dislikes the way he was grinning and like a big shot. He wonders why she is so angry and she brushes it off by saying it's nothing. She's not mad that her dad can't find work cause Shinichi is so cool. She's totally copacetic...=P. Shinichi says that it's not his fault that her dad isn't a good detective in the first place. Ran laughs it off before punching a nearby concret lamp post. She is ok but the post is cracked and bits of concrete start falling from where she hit the post. Turns out that Ran is the head of the karate club at their school.

Once they arrive at school, a stray soccer ball rolls towards Kudo. He bounces it up and kicks it at the goal a good distance away. The goalie fails to stop it and looks in shock at the speed of the ball that just flew by. Ran contemplates what would have happened to Shinichi if he hadn't quit the soccer team. To this he states that he only did soccer to stay physically fit to help him be a better detective. He compares him and his soccer to Holmes and his fencing. Kudo is infatiuated with Holmes and his ability to always remain calm and composed. Along with his intelligence and refinement and keen powers of observation, he is truly Shinichi's one true role model and what he hopes to aspire to in life. Calling him the world's greatest detective. Ran wonders why he just doesn't become a writer like his dad and Shinichi replies that he wants to solve mysteries, not be content with just writing them. To be the modern day Sherlock Holmes is his dream. He then pulls out all his fan letters to which Ran states that he should choose one favorite. Kudo imagines himself with Ran before snapping back to reality and the cold harsh stare of Ran right there beside him.

Shinichi hurries off to class as Ran reminds him of a promise he made for the next day. To go to Tropical Land together with Ran if she won the karate tournament. He fails to remember and she gets angry at him and starts trying to kick him in the head. He crouches as Ran's skirt flails through the air and lands on his head. She smacks him to the ground calling him a pervert as he lays there with a satisfied smile on his face.

There is a view of the city before zooming in on one room in particular. A woman is sitting on a chair facing the window and the full moon outside. There is some medication on the desk in front of her and a picture frame beside it. Some pearls roll into frame as what appears to be a tear falls onto one of them.

It's the next day and everyone is at Tropical Land. Ayumi is leading her group along through the park and suggests that they go ride the Mystery Coaster next. Mitsuhiko reminds her that they only have enough money left for the train ride home with Ayumi just telling them to leave it all to her. That everything will be fine. A shot of the Mystery Coaster shows Shinichi and Ran along with other people entering the main entrance. Shinichi spots Ayumi and the gang sneaking into the ride through a nearby hole in the wall. He dismisses them as hooligans not know that soon, very soon, they will be some of his newest friends.

He continues with his Holmes obsession describing how cool Holmes was that he could tell who someone was just by shaking his hand. He then proceeds to grab the hand of the girl in front of him. Apparently she is in the gymnastics club. The girl blushes as her friend asks if they know each other. The blisters on her hand gave it away. Even though you could get blisters playing tennis as well, Shinichi with his keen eye for details saw the girl's thighs when the wind blew her skirt up earlier. A man pops out of nowhere yelling that Kudo should stop bothering his pals. Kudo offers to let them switch places but the 2 girls say its ok and that they shouldn't disturb the man (Kishida) and his girlfriend (Aiko). They are then shown in a loving embrace as Kudo imagines the same situation with him and Ran. Ayumi and company are making their way through the tunnels of the roller coaster trying to get to the entrance to score a free ride as Shinichi, Ran, and everyone else board the ride. A man in black brushes through the crowd cutting other people off to get on the coaster along with his cohort. Shinichi keeps rambling on about Holmes until Ran has had enough and bursts out in anger at him. She had been looking forward to spending time with Shinichi.

The ride starts with a slow climb and then a sharp drop with Tropical Land visible in the background. The card proceeds through the tunnel where images of ghouls and goblins rush the screen. Some kind of liquid hits Shinichi in the face moments before a man groans in pain. They pass right beside the kids before exiting the tunnel. Ayumi picks up what appears to be a pearl from the ground near the ride wondering what it as. As the group exits the tunnel, we see that Kishida has a beam of light for a head. Assuming this means he's dead, his girlfriend Aiko screams feverishly. Sirens are head in the distance as they head over to the ride to help capture the killer.

The kids hear the sirens and start to get scared as Shinichi approaches them from behind. Ayumi notices him and can't contain her excitement. As Kudo reiterates his name, he winks at Ayumi before the scene switches back to the murder investigation. Back at the scene, Inspector Megure is on the case. The girlfriend cries over the victim's body as the men in black demand to be released and able to leave. Kudo announces it was a murder and that one of the 7 other people on the ride with the victim is the culprit. He and Ran are suspect as well in the game of whodunit. When Megure mentions his name, everyone around, including the mysterious men in black, are shocked to learn who he is. Megure breaks down the suspect list taking out Ran and Shinichi. There is Hitomi and her friend Rickie in the front row. Shinichi and Ran in the second. The victim and his girlfriend in the third, and the men in black in the back. Shinichi glances at the taller man in black with long hair as he once again demands to be released. Shinichi notes the man's glare that is one of someone who has killed lots of people with a second thought.

A nearby police officer finds a bloody knife in the purse of Aiko. To which she claims he has never seen. Hitomi questions their relationship and thought they were on good terms. The tall man in black agrees that Aiko killed the man as an obvious fact anyone could gather. Anyone, that is, but Detective Shinichi Kudo! As Inspector Megure orders the police to take Aiko into custody, Shinichi stops them and starts to begin unraveling the true details about this case. His first conclusion...the real murderer is ______!

Our first interlude segment with the closing/opening doors.

Shinichi identifies Hitomi as the culprit as everyone looks on shocked and confused. Hitomi denies it as Kudo continues with his deduction. Such a knife would be unsuited to sever a head in the way the victim's was. Especially for a young woman. The knife had been planted in advance to make Aiko look like the killer. How she did it is the tricky part. She used her bag and put it behind her back before the safety guard locked into place. After entering the tunnel, she dropped under the bar and using it as support, looped piano wire attached to a grappling hook around Kishida's neck before throwing the hook onto the rail. The momentum of the ride caused the head to be cleanly severed. Shinichi's ironclad proof is in the necklace missing from Hitomi's neck. She had strung the piano wires through the pearls seen early in the episode. Hitomi confesses and her motive was that Kishida had been together with her before leaving her. She wanted revenge for being left by the one she loved for another woman. So she used the same necklace and killed him at the same place where they had their first date.
